Metzler New Works Festival Submission

A.D. Players at The George Theater in Houston, TX seeks full length scripts to be developed and presented over the course of the first annual Metzler New Works Festival. The purpose of the festival is to present new American plays and musicals that contribute to the larger cultural understanding of how faith and storytelling can effectively intertwine in alignment with our mission to present and premiere work from a Christian worldview that engages a diverse audience. Three selected works will be developed over the course of two workshops, followed by a publicly presented staged reading with professional actors and directors; selected playwrights will receive an honorarium, and the possibility of premiering their work at one of the largest theatre companies in the city of Houston.

This opportunity is open to U.S. Playwrights/Librettists/Bookwriters only.

  • We are seeking full-length plays with a cast size of no more than 10.

  • Open to all styles and genres, keeping in mind that A.D. Players’ mission is to produce compelling theatre, from a Christian world-view, that engages a diverse audience. Minor language and challenging content are acceptable.

  • Previous readings and workshops are acceptable.

  • Plays previously produced by universities or community theaters (in which artists were not paid) are acceptable.

  • We will not accept plays that have received a professional production.

  • If you wish to submit a musical, please submit recordings of the music.

  • Submissions will be capped at 350 plays.  

  • Writers must be available to attend the Metzler New Works Festival, March 31-April 4, 2020 in Houston, Texas.

  • Plays must be submitted as a pdf in standard playwriting format saved as “PlayTitle_MNWF2020.pdf”

  • Mailed submissions will not be accepted.

  • Please include a separate cover page with the title, contact information, and a brief biography of the playwright saved as “Last,First_Title_MNWF2020.pdf”

  • Playwrights are not required to identify as Christian

  • A.D. Players strongly encourages diverse playwrights to submit

  • A.D. Players will utilize a blind reading process. Please do not include the playwright’s name on the script itself.

  • Submissions limited to one entry per playwright.

Selected Playwrights will receive:

  • A 16 hour developmental reading of their play at A.D. Players with a professional director and actors

  • A 29 hour developmental workshop of their play with a professional director and actors, followed by a public reading at the Metzler New Works Festival

  • A $1,000 honorarium

  • Travel expenses, room and board to initial reading and festival
